Setting up: Kitting
There can be several types of kits:
1) Product kit:
This a bundle of products that are sold together. Such a bundle must be assembled by creating a Manufacturing Order, which is automatically finished when all parts are received.
2) Material kit or phantom BOM:
This is a group of parts that are used together in manufacturing. It can be pre-assembled or used as a sub-assembly in a multi-level Manufacturing Order.
Also, the product kit functionality would allow converting a product with your internal part number to a customer-specific part number.
Such a kit item:
- Must only have a BOM, no Routing.
- Must not be configured as a procured item (“This is a procured item: No”).
In this video, we will cover the kitting and auto-assembly functionality in MRPeasy.
A kit is a product that consists of several items that are bundled together.
For example, here is a kit that consists of a table and four chairs.
This item
- Is not set up as a procured item
- Has a bill of materials, which lists the parts of the kit
- Has no routing.
The system considers such items as kits. When a manufacturing order has been created for a kit, it will be automatically completed and the kit automatically assembled, once all parts are in stock.
This function can be used in several ways.
When a kit is sold to the customer, it is possible to automatically generate a manufacturing order for auto-assembly of the kit from the customer order. Then, you will instantly see if the kit is ready for shipment or if it is waiting for components.
If you assemble the kits in a make-to-stock fashion, it is possible to manually create manufacturing orders, which will be auto-assembled when the components arrive to stock.
Kits may also be used in a multi-level manufacturing order. Historically, this functionality is also known by name “phantom BOM.” For example, a sub-assembly may be a kit and it does not require any operation to complete. This can make easier organizing data of complex product configurations.
Lastly, the function may also be used when you need to use customer-specific part numbers. To do that, you could create a customer-specific item that includes the product with your original part number in the bill of materials. Then, the auto-assembly functionality will convert it to the customer-specific part number.
All in all, the kitting functionality is simple to use and also very powerful, since it provides a lot of flexibility and helps to streamline processes.
